Our History
Prior to 1972, the people of Blooming Prairie were offered public browsing hours at the school library. Then, with the formation of SELCO, the regional library system, Blooming Prairie received bookmobile visits. It wasn’t until 1975 – with the support of SELCO and Owatonna Public Library – that the City Council finally agreed to commit to establishing our own library as a branch of Owatonna.
The first location of the Blooming Prairie Branch Library was at where is now KIK Marketing. The library opened its doors there in May 1976 with 1300 total circulating items. After the initial lease was up, the library relocated into the old Farmers and Merchants Bank building on Main Street. It lived there for a little over 10 years until the new City Center building opened in 1992.
Now, the Blooming Prairie Branch Library can be found inside that City Center building at 138 Highway Avenue South. Larger library programs and events are often held in the City Council chambers. The library collection now holds more than 25,000 circulating items.
To celebrate 2026 being our 50th anniversary, we are hosting special events and programs throughout the year! Check them out on our dedicated page: 50 Years at the Library.
